PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing apparatus and its method which has a plurality of different cameras and a plurality of different recording media for taking and saving pictures thereon and automatically sets the compression system of picture data according to the kinds of the camera and the recording medium selected by a user. SOLUTION: The photographing apparatus comprises a DVC unit for photographing a moving picture, a DVC signal processor block for outputting digital moving picture data, a first and second compressors for compressing data in a first and second specified formats, respectively, a first and second recording media for saving the data in the first and second formats, respectively, a recording medium select switch for selecting one of the first and second recording media, and a controller for controlling to transmit the digital moving picture data to one of the first and second compressors.
