PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize assignment of storage areas to minimize the waste of the storage areas assigned to volumes to host computers. SOLUTION: A storage system has a pool comprising a plurality of storage areas provided by physical disks, and assigns the storages areas in the pool to volumes provided to the host computers or releases the assignment. A management computer predicts capacity to be required at a certain time in the future for every volume based on the collected use capacity of every volume when a volume addition event occurs, computes unrequired capacity from the predicted capacity and the capacity of a storage area group already assigned to the volumes, determines whether there is the storage area to satisfy the capacity required for the addition object volume based on one or more computed unrequired capacity, and assigns the storage area of the unrequired capacity portion to the addition object volume when an affirmative determination result is obtained.
