PURPOSE: An optical recording medium and driving apparatus and method thereof is to dispose a pit and a mirror field at a front and rear portion of a header area, thereby reduce an overhead and thus eliminating a cross torque. CONSTITUTION: An optical recording medium(102) has a header area indicating an address information for a basic recording unit, wherein the header area is comprised of a physical identification area and a physical pit area. An apparatus for driving the optical recording medium comprises a detecting portion for detecting the physical identification information and the physical pit information from the optical recording medium tracked by a pick-up(104), and a controlling portion for distinguishing the physical identification information and the physical pit information and generating a land/groove switching information and a servo related control information to control an addressing operation of the pick-up. In the apparatus, the detecting portion has an optical detecter(118) for dividing an optical signal reflected from the optical recording medium into a plurality of parts and outputting the signal, a first and second calculating portion for providing a first channel signal corresponding to a sum of the divided signals and a second channel signal.
