In certain embodiments, the iterative reconstruction is a multi-stage iterative reconstruction in which different feature are selectively emphasized at different stages. Selective emphasis at different stages may be accomplished by differentially handling two or more decompositions of an input image at certain iterations and/or by differently processing certain features with respect to each stage.

An iterative image reconstruction method, comprising: accessing a set of projection images; performing a first stage of a multi-stage iterative reconstruction of the set of projection images, each stage comprising one or more iterative steps, wherein the first stage selectively emphasizes a subset of features of the projection images for iterative processing, wherein the selective emphasis of the first stage is defined by one or more parameters specified for the first stage; subsequent to the first stage, performing at least a second stage of the multi-stage iterative reconstruction, wherein the second stage selectively emphasizes a different subset of features of the projection images for iterative processing, wherein the selective emphasis of the second stage is defined by one or more parameters specified for the second stage that differ in value or range from the first stage; and upon satisfying a completion criterion, concluding the multi-stage iterative reconstruction and generating a final image.
