PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical method for separating p-xylene from an 8C aromatic hydrocarbon mixture containing p-xylene. SOLUTION: When performing adsorption separation of p-xylene from the 8C aromatic hydrocarbon mixture containing p-xylene, p-xylene can be economically isolated by using a faujasite type adsorbent and a 4-ethyl-m-xylene desorbent. In the method for separating a para-xylene isomer, when performing adsorption separation of para-xylene from the mixture containing para-xylene using a faujasite zeolite adsorbent, 4-ethyl-m-xylene is used as a desorbent.
