PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording and reproducing apparatus which can limit viewable contents without any necessity of inputting a password. SOLUTION: A controlling portion 2 displays a list of titles recorded in HD30A except for those assigned by parents as screened titles on TV 300. In this case, children cannot select the screened titles, that is, cannot reproduce the screened titles. When the parents want to view the screened titles, they have only to set DVD 100 wherein canceled files are recorded in an optical disc drive 20. When canceled files are stored in the DVD 100, the controlling portion 2 temporarily cancels prohibition to display only for the screened titles corresponding to the canceled files stored in the DVD 100 out of the assigned screened titles.
