PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detection unit capable of detecting focus in a wide field of view while avoiding a reduction in accuracy and increase in size.SOLUTION: A focus detection unit (100) is configured to detect focus of an image capturing lens, on the basis of: an imaging optical system configured to split light rays passing through the image capturing lens (10) and forming an image of the split rays in a detection plane of a photoelectric conversion element (114) comprising a plurality of pixels; first and second focus detection pixel groups (114A, 114B) extending in a direction of the split in the detection plane of the photoelectric conversion element (114); and output signals from the focus detection pixel groups.
