<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium ion secondary battery which realizes increase in initial charge and discharge efficiency without deteriorating charge and discharge characteristics compared with a conventional technology. <P>SOLUTION: This is a carbon material in which the surface interval d002 of a carbon 002 face obtained by an X-ray diffraction device is 0.340 nm or more and 0.370 nm or less, and the ratio V1/V2 value of a pore volume (V1) of the pore diameter 1 nm or more and less than 10 nm and the pore volume (V2) of the pore diameter 10 nm or more and less than 100 nm is 0.2 or less.
