PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device and a retinal scanning type image display device for making it possible not to be easily influenced by an unexpected swing or vibration due to a saw-toothed shake occurring at a place ranging from a swing start place to a display start place with the display of an effective image. SOLUTION: From the time corresponding to a place at which a vertical scanning system is disposed in an effective scanning start place t2 between a swing start place t1 and a blanking start place t4, the projection of light starts to display an effective image. The projection of light for displaying the effective image between the effective scanning start place t2 and the blanking start place t4 is carried out in an effective image scanning region F. A light detection sensor for detecting scanned light is disposed at an ineffective image scanning regions H and I in which the effective image is not displayed between the effective scanning start place t2 and the blanking start place t4, which are different from the effective image scanning region F.
