PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a red-emitting phosphor of high brightness capable of being used as the red-emitting phosphor of a display apparatus such as FED device and EL device for irradiating the phosphor with an excitation energy source such as an electronic ray and an electric field. SOLUTION: In the red-emitting phosphor, Al (aluminum) and Mn (manganese) are added to a matrix material represented by the general formula: MIIM2IIIS4and at least one element in the Group IIIa of the periodic table is added as a co-additive wherein MIIrepresents one of Mg (magnesium), Ca (calcium), Sr (strontium) and Ba (barium) or a combination of these; and MIIIrepresents one of Ga (gallium) and In (indium) or a combination of these.
