PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method for a stepping motor, wherein a pulse motor is accelerated at a certain acceleration (torque), and when a drive pulse rate approaches its pull-out torque, the acceleration is reduced in matching with the curve of its pull-out torque characteristics, to enhance the finally achieved frequency and the motor speed. SOLUTION: The drive method for a stepping motor is such that acceleration/deceleration driving is carried out, by combining linear acceleration/deceleration driving in which in a low-speed range; speed is increased/decreased by constant-current control and hyperbolic acceleration/deceleration driving in which in a high speed range, speed is increased/decreased by a hyperbolic function; the speed F<SB>ha</SB>at which linear acceleration/deceleration driving is switched to hyperbolic acceleration/deceleration driving is computed; and acceleration/deceleration driving is thereby carried out so that it approximates the torque-speed characteristic curve of the stepping motor.
