The key cutting apparatus 34 includes a key measurement station 36 and a workstation 38 operable to hold a key blank to be cut as a copy of an original key measured by the measurement station. A cutting system 40 is operable to cut the key blank in accordance with the measurements made. The measurement station is operable to measure the length of the original key. The cutting system is operable to cut a key blank to length, in accordance with the measured length of the original key. A shank length or a blade length from a shoulder of the original key may be measured. The measurement station may also include a light source 44 and a camera 46 to observe an illuminated original key to obtain measurements of the original key. The apparatus may further include a test object (64, Figure 4) which, when placed in the measurement station 36, allows the camera to obtain calibration measurements relating to the light source. |
