1316716 Trimming necks of hollow articles SOLVAY & CIE 9 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970 18 Feb 1971] 51977/71 Heading B5A Apparatus for trimming the unwanted portion of the necks off plastics bottles, or similar necked hollow articles, after blow moulding comprises a driving element e.g. a rotating disc 4 adapted to engage the necks of the bottles by means of rollers 7 and hooks 8 and carry them past and against the edge of a cutting blade 18 which trims the neck, means such as an endless belt 9 being provided to rotate individually the bottle necks as they pass against the blade. The apparatus shown is adapted for cutting pairs of bottles 6 joined by a central neck portion, the rollers 7 being mounted in pairs and twin belts and cutters being provided. The bottles are delivered horizontally by a conveyer 5 and the peripheral speed of the driving element 4 matches that of the conveyer. The belt 9 may be linked by a sprocket chain with the driving element 4 or may be separately driven. The pressure of the belt against the bottles is regulated by spring loaded pulley 15. Preferably both rollers and belt are profiled to match the bottle neck and to locate it accurately against the cutter. Preferably the disc 4 is provided with an even number of rollers so that alternate rollers may be removed to accommodate larger bottles, and the diameter of each roller is 1À5 to 2À5 times that of the bottle. The cutter is preferably bevelled at its front and cutting edges, the cutting point rounded off and the - leading corner of the blade shaped slightly so that higher rates of cutting may be obtained on hot moulded bodies (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). The cutter which may be heated, may be arcuate or circular or may be a cutting-wheel, either fixed or rotatable. Instead of a disc driving element a chain, belt or any other means capable of advancing the bottles past the cutter may be used. The belt 9 for rotating the bottles may be replaced by a wheel with a resilient rim. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), for trimming single bottles, the bottles are transported on a conveyer in a vertical position and the trimming apparatus is mounted horizontally, arms being affixed to the disc to engage the necks of the bottles, in cooperation with the rollers, instead of the hooks 8. The cutter is set at an angle to the path of the bottles as they advance. |
