An implant, artificial or semi-artificial at implantation, for implantation at an articular cartilage and osteochondral defect site in a human comprising: a manufactured biocompatible scaffold, the scaffold comprising at least a first surface and a second surface; the first surface shaped to press-fit into the defect site to create an interface between the first surface and a bone-cartilage region of the defect site; the second surface shaped to press-fit into the defect site to create an interface between the second surface and an articular cartilage region of the defect site; a distance d1 between the first and second surfaces; and depth d2 from the second surface, wherein d2 comprises a greater concentration of articular chondroprogenitor cells than the concentration of these cells in the remaining depth of the implant and wherein d2/d1<1.
