The pen or pencil has a cartridge sliding under spring action in the lengthwise direction in the housing into the writing position. Movement in this direction is effected by a pivoting part passing through a lengthwise slot in the housing and acting on the rear end of the cartridge, and having a clip whose free end enters the slot in the writing position. The pivoting part (2) extends over the width of the interior (4) of the housing, which has a further lengthwise slot (9) on the opposite side, through which an actuating face (2h) on it protrudes when the cartridge (5) is in the extended position. The edge of the pivoting part towards the cartride end, has a cam (2a,2g,2b) with two support faces (2a,2b) of different heights when measured in the lengthwise direction of the housing, and over which the cartridge end slides.
