The column assembly is intended for holding and operating a portable power tool (7). It comprises a base plate (1) with a vertical column (2) to which a carrier rod (6) for the tool is releasably securable such that it is swivelable about a horizontal pivot. One end of the rod is provided with a fixing to secure the tool. The column may be in the form of a fork with a number of vertically spaced bores (3) to receive the pivot. The rod may be axially slidable (a) in a bush (4) pivoted to the column. The rod may be part of a parallelogram linkage and may be rotatable relative to the column about a vertical axis.
