PURPOSE:To make high-speed recognizing process possible with a character recognizing device, by providing different processors for character segmenting and character recognition and operating each processor in parallel and, moreover, making the execution of the intermediate process of a processing procedure from the character segmenting to be recognition possible. CONSTITUTION:Picture data sent from a photoelectrically converting means, etc., are accumulated in a data memory 8 as slip pictures by an interface circuit 6 through a bus 7A. A segmenting processor 3 starts the process under the control of a segmenting control memory 11. A schedule control program accumulated in the control memory 11 checks the condition of a recognition processor 4 whenever each step of the segmenting processor 3 is terminated. When the recognition processor 4 is in an idle condition, the segmenting processor 3 stops the process until the step and takes over the process to the recognition processor 4. The recognition processor 4 performs the process under the control of a recognition control memory 12.
