PURPOSE:To obtain a small-sized portable television camera with low cost and high performance by using a linear image sensor as a solid-state image pickup element, executing the scanning in the vertical direction with the rotation of a rotary refracting body and limiting the width of the said rotary refracting body and refractive index. CONSTITUTION:In the television camera comprising the linear image sensor and the rotary refracting body, the ratio of the thickness and width of the rotary refracting body is 1:4-1:10 and the refractive index of the rotary refracting body is selected in the range from 1.7-3.5. As a concrete material of the rotary refracting body, an optical glass such as YAG, YIG, GGG, cubic zirconia, afire, zircon or diamond is used. Further, in order to prevent that the incident ray enters the end face 18 of the rotary refracting body 9 and the unnecessary light is transmitted, it is required for the end face 18 to apply the light shield processing. Since a cylindrical hood is rotated integrally with the rotary refracting body 9, the air resistance is reduced and it is prevented that the stability of rotation of the rotary refracting body is lost.
