PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ester which is soluble in organic solvents and is useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of medicines, etc., by reacting a specified carboxymethylated tamarind gum with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The titled ester soluble in various organic solvents is obtained by reacting, by heating under agitation, carboxy-methylated tamarind gum (alkali metal salt) (A) of an average degree of substitution >=1.50 with at least 5 equivalent, per equivalent of the carboxymethyl groups of component A, of a 1-8 C alcohol (B) (e.g., ethyl alcohol) at 10-100 deg.C for 10-300min in the presence of 1.0-3.0 equivalent, per equivalent of the carboxymethyl groups of component A, of an acid catalyst (e.g., 90-98% sulfuric acid) and by suitably selecting ester groups.
