PURPOSE:To obtain the titled highly active catalyst component which can give a high-bulk density olefin polymer, by contacting a metal oxide with a magnesium alkoxide, a halogen-containing compound and a titanium compound in sequence. CONSTITUTION:An oxide of an element selected from those of Groups II-IV of the periodic table (e.g., MgO or SiO2) is contacted with a magnesium alkoxide (e.g., magnesium dimethoxide or magnesium di(2-ethylhexyl oxide)) by, for example, mixing and agitation. This product is contacted with a halogen-containing compound (e.g., SiCl4 or HSiCl3). The formed product is further contacted with a titanium compound (e.g., titanium tetrachloride) to obtain the purpose olefin polymerization catalyst component. This catalyst component is used in combination with an organoaluminum compound (e.g., triethylaluminum) for the (co)polymerization of an olefin.
