PURPOSE:To generate a read signal always proper by providing a photodetection section for signal light and reference light to a read element and using the signal light and the reference light as the light from one and same light source thereby making the ratio of the both constant even when the light intensity of the light source is changed. CONSTITUTION:An original O is carried while being lighted by a lamp 215. A light (reflected light) of the original O from a light section of the reader forms an image of the original to a photodetector section 201 for signal line of a read element 200 as a signal light by the image forming operation of a nonmagnification element array 210 as a signal light. Moreover, part of a reflector 215A of the lamp 215 is notched as a slit taking a direction orthogonal to this figure as the lengthwise direction and the light of the reflector lamp 215 is made incident in the photodetector section 202 for reference light of a read element 200. The reference light provision means utilizes the shape (slit shaped notch) of the light source and the relation of position between the light source and the read element 200. Thus, when the original O is carried and scanned, the read element 200 receives the signal light and the reference light to read the picture information on an original.
