PURPOSE:To obtain a recording medium which is decreased in noise and has high reliability without degrading recording and reproducing outputs by setting the deposition speed of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film to be deposited on a nonmagnetic substrate at >=1,000Angstrom /S or above at the time of forming a magnetic layer on the substrate by a vapor deposition method. CONSTITUTION:The substrate 4 which is a polyethylene terephthalate film having a prescribed thickness is moved along a cylindrical cooling can 3 via a guide roll 6 from a delivery roll 5 in a vacuum vessel 1. This substrate 4 is so set as to be taken up on a take-up roll 8 via a guide roll 7 and a ferromagnetic material 10 consisting of a Co-Ni alloy is set in a evaporation source 9 of a ferromagnetic material. The inside of the vacuum vessel 1 is evacuated to a vacuum by a vacuum evacuation system 2 and the material 10 which is the Co-Ni alloy is evaporated by heating. The deposition speed of the thin ferromaetic metallic film layer to be provided on the substrate 4 is set at >=10,000Angstrom /S. The magnetic recording medium which is decreased in noise and has the high reliability is thus prepd. without degrading the recording and reproducing outputs.
