The sole (8) is hollow and inflated through a valve (10) which is moulded into it during mfr. Its upper surface is stiffened with canvas, its sides (9) have anti-deformation ribs and its underside (12) has a tread. The sole is mfd. from a tubular blank, fed into a cold mould by an extruder. The blank is then inflated with compressed air so that it fits against the surfaces of the mould and is cooled. The mould is made in two hinged halves, with their inner surfaces patterned to form the ribs and tread.
