<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems of a LCD (Liquid Crystal Displays) of the conventional type that a color gamut is restricted and that efficiency is low in low luminance. <P>SOLUTION: Backlight for the LCD uses at least one red light source, at least one green light source, and at least one blue light source as light sources. One of the light sources is provided with a light emitting diode capable of emitting light of a first wavelength and a wavelength conversion material capable of absorbing the light of the first wavelength and emitting light of a second wavelength. In a certain embodiment, the wavelength conversion material is a strontium thiogallate phosphor or nitridosilicate phosphor. In a certain embodiment, the first wavelength is approximately the same as the light emitted by the blue light source or is barely visible by the human eyes. By using the wavelength conversion light emitting diode as the green light source in the LCDs, the wavelength conversion material emits light at the same wavelength as the range of a pump wavelength and therefore the chroma of the LCDs can be maintained without the need for the respective LCDs to emit the light of the same color. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
