<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of banding by decreasing changes in the speed of an image carrier which are caused by a toner streak sticking to an image non-formation area on an intermediate transfer body or an equivalent area on the image carrier. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes; a latent image formation means for forming an electrostatic latent image on the image carrier 3; a development means 6a for developing the electrostatic latent image into a toner image; a primary transfer means 13 for transferring the toner image to the intermediate transfer body 12; a secondary transfer means 15 for transferring the toner image, transferred to the intermediate transfer body, to a recording medium. The image forming apparatus further includes a member which is brought into contact with and separated from the image non-formation area on the intermediate transfer body or the equivalent area on the image carrier or a member which is driven and stopped in such an area. In the image forming apparatus, a countermeasure image 26 is formed on the intermediate transfer boy upstream of the position where the member is brought into contact with and separated from the area or driven and stopped in the area, in the direction of the advancement of the intermediate transfer body.
