A device for smoothing the two faces of an elastic fleece of fibres, when the filaments forming it, extruded from the melt and chilled in water, curl and adhere to each other, has smooth guiding surfaces fixed in the vat containing the bath. These are inclined relatively to the surface of the water, at angles between 10 degrees and 80 degrees, in planes intersecting vertical planes parallel to the sheet of filaments forming the fleece, and to the rows of extrusion openings in the spinning head. The guides may intersect the surface of the bath along a line vertically below the outside row of extrusion openings, or further inwards. Or one of the guides may have two surfaces inclined towards each other and diverging downwards, following a straight line about 5 mm above the water level, parallel to and vertically below, the second to the eigth row of openings in the spinning head. Produces an elastic fleece smooth on both faces, without the use of pressure cylinders or other moving parts.
