This knee pad is provided with a semi-shell-shaped lower part resting against the lower leg of the user and a semi-shell-shaped upper part resting against the thigh and connected in an articulated fashion to the lower part in the knee region. The lower part has a cushioning insert and is clasped by the upper part which is pivotable at an angle relative thereto in the pivoting range. For maximum protection of the knee joint of the user, especially against penetration of foreign bodies, without having to accept an impairment of the range of movements, the side walls of the lower part are locally raised in the form of cheek-like attachments covering the knee joint on both sides. At the same time, the height of these attachments is to be dimensioned such that it has a size corresponding to up to half the depth of the lower part. Moreover, these attachments are essentially semi-circular.
