An airbag for protection against side impacts which can be added to the car after purchase, preferably within the doors, has the inflated bag extending from the head-thorax region of the occupant to the side structure of the car. There is a cap-shaped container (7) with the sensor on the base plus the electronic unit (8) containing the diagnosis and release mechanism, the compressed-air generator (12) in front of it and the folded bag (18) on each side of it. Finally there is a cover (17). Integrated with the base is a pressure-sensing membrane (11). The edge of the flange (14) of the container is bent upwards.
