The horizontal outline signal generating circuit comprises first and second gain control units for inputting a brightness signal and amplifying the brightness signal to a different gain according to a brightness level; a first outline generator for inputting the output signal of the first gain control unit and generating an outline signal with narrow width at a high brightness; a second outline generator for inputting the output signal of the second gain control unit and generating an outline signal which is relatively wider at a low brightness than at a high brightness; and an adder for adding the outputs of the first and second outline generators.
