PURPOSE: A method of expanding an image of an image display apparatus is provided to select an image in the ratio of 4:3 or 16:9 according to a signal format of an inputted image signal, and to expand the selected image, thereby expanding a desirous image as maintaining vertical and horizontal ratios of the image. CONSTITUTION: A user defines a range to expand an image(S401), and operates an input device of an image display apparatus to show a 4:3 or 16:9 OSD expansion window(S402). If the user selects the expansion window(S403), the image display apparatus decides whether a presently-set display mode is a 4:3 OSD window(S404). If so, the apparatus displays a 4:3 OSD screen(S405). If the display mode is not the 4:3 OSD window, the apparatus displays a 16:9 OSD screen(S407). An image processor differently sets an expansion ratio according to 4:3 or 16:9 selection, and performs an image expansion procedure(S406,S408). The image processor displays an image expanded according to the ratio of the selected OSD window(S409).
