Dilatometer for measuring the dilatation curves of annealed or rolled sheets. It consists of a pair of compasses(1, 2) and an adjustable pick-up(6) between the legs of the compasses. The dilatometer is used for measuring the effect of the rate of cooling of a steel ingot at high temperature on the microstructure of the steel. The transformation in the phase under isothermal conditions is determined by the dilatometer which is placed on the moving plate immediately after the rollers. The sintered magnesium oxide points(4) are fitted to the free ends of the legs of the dilatometer. The zero setting(9) is before the displacement pick up.
