STEROL COMPOUND

A sterol compound represented by general formula (I), wherein X represents halogen; R<1> and R<2> represent each independently hydrogen or C2-C5 alkanoyl; and A represents -CO- or -CH(OH)-. The invention provides a novel sterol compound isolated from a sponge of the genus Xestospongia and another novel sterol compound by chemically modifying the above compound. The invention also provides aragusterol C and a novel sterol compound by chemically modifying the known aragusterol A. The obtained compounds are superior to aragusterol A in antineoplastic activity and useful as a medicine. <CHEM>
