In an electric arc welding process, a sensor system uses a measurement voltage to determine the correct position of the welding wire in relation to the workpiece. The measurement voltage is at a value which does not exceed a level which ensures a spark between the workpiece and the welding wire, at 10 V or less. The appts. is set to give 10 V or less at the output of the monitoring voltage supply.
