A voltage monitor (160) has an output (164) connected to an input (112) of a microprocessor (100) having two modes of operation, one of which is at reduced power consumption. The monitor is designed to produce at its output (166) a signal to operate at reduced power when the monitored voltage falls to a chosen low level. The supply maintaining circuit includes a capacitor (135) and the voltage monitor connects the capacitor to the microprocessor if the monitored voltage dips. A voltage regulator (120) is fitted between the battery (B) and the microprocessor (100) and the monitored voltage is the voltage at a point in front of the regulator. Supply for automobile microprocessor (100) which includes battery (B), capacitor (130), diodes (140, 145), comparator (160), and module (170) forming a supplementary energy reserve. The components maintain, during a momentary dip in battery supply voltage, a level of supply to the microprocessor sufficient to prevent re-initializing of it. The comparator monitors the voltage in a bridge circuit, in front of the microprocessor, which controls, during a dip in the monitored voltage, activation of a voltage preservation circuit (112,135).
