PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element using a cholesteiric liquid crystal of which the electrooptical characteristics varies only slightly even when the liquid crystal is deteriorated by irradiation of light such as ultraviolet rays, and to provide a method for driving the same. SOLUTION: A pixel space is formed and arranged with a plurality of common electrodes and a plurality of segment electrodes mutually perpendicularly intersecting in a matrix shape. A picture is displayed by providing the cholesteiric liquid crystal or a chiral nematic liquid crystal in the pixel space and applying a pulse driving voltage of 200 Hz or higher frequency to the gap between the electrodes with the pixel space interposed between them. In the liquid crystal display device, the driving voltage applied to the pixels is made to be pulse voltage with 200 Hz or higher frequency (1) or to be first pulse voltage and succeeding second pulse voltage with a frequency higher than that of the first pulse voltage.
