摘要
1,267,106. Settling of finely divided solids materials from suspension in liquids. AMERICAN SUGAR CO. 20 Nov., 1969 [26 Nov., 1968], No. 56910/69. Heading B1D. [Also in Divisions C1 and C6] Finely divided solid materials are separated from suspension in a liquid, such as a carbonation juice from a beet or cane sugar factory, by adding a small proportion (e.g. 0.1 to 30 ppm) of a settling aid, such as polyacrylamide having a molecular weight of 2 to 3 millions, whereby a slurry of solid agglomerates in liquid is obtained, introducing the slurry through a central standpipe 34 into a central position 32 above the bottom of a settling vessel, arresting the upward motion of the influent slurry and displacing it outwards by means of horizontal baffle 40 so that it is dispersed with the liquid in the settling zone 44 from which large agglomerates of solids rapidly settle, removing dense slurry of solids from well 36 through outlet 50, and removing clarified liquid from a peripheral opening 52 at the top of the settling vessel. The clarified liquid is collected in trough 54, and withdrawn through outlet 56. The height of baffle 40 can be adjusted to facilitate variation in the level at which the slurry is introduced into the settling vessel. The depth of the settling zone 44 is partly controlled by rakes 68, attached to rotary disc 72, which move the agglomerates into well 36. The upper boundary of the settling zone may be maintained at level 66 by a pump attached to outlet 50, the pump being controlled by a photo-electric cell 84 sensitized by light from lamp 86 transmitted through clear plastic rod 88. The settling process and apparatus may also be employed in water softening by the lime-soda process.
