The invention relates to a clamping system in which a thrust or pull piston is prestressed under high pressure by a compressible elastomer and retains the clamping force under this high pressure over a relatively long re-tightening displacement. The prestressing pressure can be produced, for example, via a pressure screw to be operated mechanically or else with a high-pressure pump. In clamping elements which are to constantly clamp and release, the clamping pressure, which is produced by the prestressed compressible elastomer, can be eased hydraulically, for example, and can come into full effect again after the hydraulic pressure drops. These clamping elements have the advantage that the clamping force caused by the prestressed compressible elastomer is constantly available and keeps a clamped tool or rope, for example, clamped until the clamping force is neutralised mechanically or, for example, by oil pressure.
