The safety device comprises a member 5 which is unstable when the iron is moving, and means for immobilising this member when the iron is resting flat or on its heel or lying on its side. The appliance furthermore comprises means 7, 8 and 9, 10 for detecting the preceding immobilisation positions of the member 5 and for controlling the electrical supply to at least one electrical heating resistor 12 arranged in thermal contact with a temperature limiter 11, the resistor 12 and the limiter 11 both being adapted to automatically cut the electrical supply to the electrical resistor 17 for heating the mobile electrical heating appliance after a predetermined safety period.
