PURPOSE:To restore even a word including an unrecognizable character and to recognize words at high accuracy and high efficiency by constituting a word dictionary to designate from words of lower order hierarchy to words of higher order hierarchy. CONSTITUTION:Standard character patterns for each character category are stored beforehand in a recognition dictionary 4. A character recognizing section 3 divides image data at every character and extracts shape characteristic at every character pattern and collates with the shape characteristic of standard patterns from the recognition dictionary 4. Thus, the specified number of standard character patterns having high resemblance are extracted as possible character category at every character. In a hierarchy word dictionary 7, a file is provided at every hierarchy. Words registered in the first - third files have the hierarchical relation of tree structure, and the word of high hierarchy instructed by a pointer attached to the word is one.
