The invention concerns a human protein 9 containing the fragment of prion characteristic sequence and polynucleotide encoding it. The invention also concerns the process of producing the polypeptide by recombinant DNA technique. The methods for treating many diseases e.g. water electrolytic metabolic disorders, developmental disorders, a variety of tumor, inflammation, immunological diseases etc. utilizing the polypeptide are disclosed. The invention discloses the uses of the polynucleotide, which encodes a human protein 9 containing the fragment of prion characteristic sequence.
