PURPOSE: Provided are heat insulating granules for use in heat insulating materials, which are uniformly self-foamed by heating or microwave radiation without using any external foaming agent, and easily controlled in terms of the foaming degree. CONSTITUTION: The heat insulating granules comprise a mixture(13) consisting of 100 parts by weight of water glass and 2-20 parts by weight of at least one material selected from the group consisting of diatomaceous earth, loess and jade; and 1-3 parts by weight of a releasing agent based on 100 parts by weight of the mixture(13), wherein the granules have the final water content of 5-15 wt%. The heat insulating granules are produced by the method comprising: the step(100) for grinding at least one material selected from the group consisting of diatomaceous earth(11), loess and jade; the step(200) for selecting the ground powder into the size up to 300 mesh; the step(300) for mixing the water glass(12) with the powder to form a slurry mixture(13); the step(400) for adding methyl alcohol to the mixture(13) and cooling to room temperature; the step(500) for extruding the mixture into the shape of rods and cutting the rods to form short rod-like granules(14); and the step for aging and drying the granules(14).
