<p>PURPOSE:To well orient the molecules of a liq. crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy when an electric field is applied and to enable mass production by covering the surface of a substrate of a liq. crystal dispaly element with a vertically orienting film and by carrying out rubbing. CONSTITUTION:In the manufacture of a device for conducting positive guest- host display by vertically orienting a nematic liq. crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy contg. a digenetic dye, a patterned electrode 2 is formed on a glass substrate 1, and a cationic surfactant contg. fluorine represented by the formula such as ''FX-161 '' of SUMITOMO 3M Co. is dissolved in alcohol, coated on the substrate 1, and dried to cover the substrate 1 with an orienting film 3. The film 3 is then worked with a rubbing machine 4 rotating in the direction of an arrow A to form whisker-shaped surface molecules 5. The molecules of the liq. crystal are oriented parallel to the molecules 5 and slightly obliquely from the vertical direction when no electric field is applied. When an electric field is applied, the molecules of the liq. crystal rise in the direction of an arrow B, and they are well oriented to give a display of superior contrast.</p> |
