A machine for wrapping cylindrical rolls of paper wound on a reel having a central core has a loading conveyor (15) and vertically adjustable drive rolls (19) which raise the reel so that its longitudinal axis is placed on an axis of rotation of the wrapping machine. A wrapping head (16) winds wrapping material endwise around the paper roll which is rotated about its longitudinal axis during the wrapping operation by the drive rollers (19). The wrapping head (16) is tilted at an angle to the vertical so that the endwise wrapping takes place in a plane at an angle to the axis of rotation of the roll so that the wrapping does not cover the ends of the core of the reel.
