A fibre band e.g. a roving is impregnated with a liquid adhesive, condensed and allowed to cut so as to produce a high density (i.e. greater than 0.5 gms/cm<SP>3</SP>) band with less elasticity and greater strength than the untreated band. The treated band may be subjected to a high draft (e.g. 30-150) by apparatus not having roving guides and aprons. In addition the product is easily transported. The treated band may be given a definite cross-section e.g. rectangular or square. In Fig. 1, roving V is subjected to a small preliminary drafting by rollers 2, 3 before being formed by a member 5 about a tube 8 through which liquid adhesive is passed. The treated band is then compressed by disks 9, 10 between side plates 11, 12, see also Fig. 2 not shown, and dried. It is then ready for a high draft. The same process may be used with low draft in the preparatory stages of the spinning process. Suitable adhesives are:- starch and its derivatives, derivatives of cellulose, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose, cellulose-ether &c., alginates, derivatives of albumines, synthetic resins, e.g. melamine and formaldehyde. The adhesive may be in the form of a solution or a dispersion and should have a small tendency to migrate on setting. Preferably the adhesive should form a somewhat elastic bond. The liquid adhesive may be combined with dyes, bleaching chemicals, sizing agents, defoamers, wetting agents or fungicides. The treated band may be heated to set the adhesive. Examples are given in which full details of producing a yarn from a bonded fibrous structure are given. |
