Fibrous material consists of a ground mixt. of organic fibres, impregnated with a hardener in soln. consisting of a wood glue modified by addition of colloidal graphite and siliceous inorganic fibres, in a ratio of between 1 part inorganic fibres per 100 parts organic fibres, and 100 parts inorganic fibres to 1 part organic fibres. The material is used in brake and clutch linings esp. for heavy vehicles. The friction masses produced have superior wear resistance to those made from asbestos. They produce practically no abrasion of the metallic surfaces in contrast to materials contg. only inorganic fibres.
