The separator, with a cylindrical shell, contains a bundle of semipermeable, hollow fibers whose ends are embedded in a wall, with both ends of the fibers or only 1 end being open. The fiber bundle is compressed axially by a fixed structure, a coil spring, or a wt. when the bundle is vertical. The feed fluid flows axially outside the fibers. The axial compression increases the packing density or the volumetric packing factor and, thus, decreases channelling.
