The apparatus to test a vehicle tyre has jaws (3,4) which are activated to grip and lock a positioned tyre, which is inflated to a given pressure. The jaws (3,4), with the tyre, are moved into a second position while a water bath (21) is raised to give the tyre a partial immersion. The tyre is rotated, and the water bath (21) is lowered to its original position. The jaws (3,4) return to their first setting, and are opened. Preferably one or more of the steps are effected at least partially at the same time. The movements of the jaws (3,4) are stopped if there is a resistance or if they pass over a given threshold. Pedal controls set the working of the apparatus for the different stages in the test. The arms for the jaws form a linked parallelogram, on a rotating plate round a horizontal axis, together with a locking mechanism. The water bath (21) has an overflow, and an automatic top-up, to maintain a constant water level in the bath. A system registers the escape of air from the inflated tyre, when it has been returned to the rest position. The jaws (3,4) have exchangeable discs, to be fitted according to the type and dimensions of the tyre under test, fitted with wedges to position the tyre.
