The knob (2) is set (XX) in the face-plate (5) of a control module (1) located eg. in a dashboard. Face-plate markings offer eg. 3 function positions for the knob index mark (6), giving independent control of eg. temperature, air distribution and fan speed. In each position, tilting the knob (F1, F2) causes a finger (14) at the end of a bar (12, 13), eccentrically mounted underneath (4), to operate one of a pair of microswitches (eg. 11a-1, 11b-1). Switch operation generates a signal pulse raising or lowering by a fixed amount, according to tilt direction, the controlled quantity, eg. temperature. This stepping control is transferrable to the other functions, each having its own switch pair (11a-2, 11b-2; 11a-3, 11b-3), by 90 or 1880 deg. knob rotation. An all-purpose visual display confirms each command implementation.
