A control unit (12), on the basis of an input picture signal that is received as input, supplies a first modulating signal for modulating each basic light beam that accords with the color of each pixel of an image indicated by the input picture signal and a second modulating signal for modulating the supplemental light beam in accordance with the specific color level in each pixel that indicates the degree of similarity between the color of the pixel and, of the colors of the plurality of basic light beams, a prescribed color that differs from the color of the supplemental light beam. Modulation units (108, 109, 110) modulate and emit the basic light beams in accordance with the first modulating signal and modulate and emit the supplemental light beam in accordance with the second modulating signal.
