A heating system comprising a furnace, a thermostatic controller, a sensor of indoor temperature operatively connected to the thermostatic controller, a receiver operatively connected to the thermostatic controller for receiving a signal indicative of an outdoor temperature indicator, wherein the thermostatic controller is configured to operate according to the method.

A method for automatically operating a heating system controller for heating an unoccupied indoor space which is in a locale where bursting of water pipes due to freezing is known to be a problem comprising: automatically obtaining at least one indoor temperature signal from at least one sensor representing temperature measurements of the indoor space automatically obtaining at least one outdoor temperature indicator signal representing at least one outdoor temperature indicator determining a freeze protection point that represents a value of an outdoor temperature indicator automatically operating the heating system to heat the indoor space so that the indoor temperature measurement signals are kept at within standard sensitivity ranges, or above a default set point when the outdoor temperature indicator signals reflect an outdoor temperature indicator that is at or above the freeze protection point; automatically operating the heating system to heat the indoor space so that the indoor temperature measurement signals are kept at, within standard sensitivity ranges, or above a computed set point which is based on at least one outdoor temperature indicator and which is higher than the default set point, when the outdoor temperature indicator signals reflect an outdoor temperature indicator that is below the freeze protection point.
